What is body doubling?

Body doubling means doing a task while another person is present, in the room or on a video call. They don't help, supervise or judge. They're simply there. And for many people, especially those with ADHD, that changes everything.

The meaning of body doubling, in plain English

A "body double" is a companion whose presence helps you start and stay with a task. They might sit quietly with a book while you sort paperwork, fold laundry alongside you, or simply stay on a video call while you tackle the kitchen. The work is still yours; the company is what makes it possible.

If you've ever found cleaning easier when a friend was over, or worked better in a café than at your empty desk, you've already felt the body doubling effect.

Why body doubling works so well for ADHD

ADHD brains often struggle with task initiation, not because the task is hard, but because the brain can't generate enough activation to begin. Body doubling helps in several ways:

  • Borrowed activation. Another person's calm presence acts like an external "on switch" when your internal one won't flip.
  • Gentle accountability. You said you'd sort the airing cupboard at 2pm, and someone is there at 2pm. No pressure, just a reason to begin.
  • Anchored attention. Wandering focus has something to return to. The session has a shape: a start, a companion, an end.
  • Less overwhelm. Tasks feel smaller when you're not facing them alone, and a body double can help you decide what "done for today" looks like.

None of this is a gimmick, it's a widely recommended ADHD coping strategy precisely because it's so simple. You don't need an app, a system or a diagnosis. You need company.

How to try body doubling yourself

  • Ask a friend or family member to sit with you (or stay on the phone) while you do one specific task.
  • Agree the time and the task in advance, "Saturday, 10am, the hall cupboard" works better than "sometime this weekend".
  • Keep sessions short. An hour of accompanied focus beats an afternoon of struggling alone.
  • Let the body double be boringly unhelpful. They're not there to make decisions about your belongings, only you should do that.

Virtual body doubling sessions with me

If there's no one you can ask, or you'd rather have someone who understands ADHD and won't comment on the mess, I offer virtual body doubling sessions for £20 an hour. We pick the task together, I stay with you on the call with quiet encouragement, and difficult jobs suddenly feel possible. Location doesn't matter at all; these work anywhere.

And if the clutter itself has grown past what an hour of company can fix, my decluttering and home organisation services across West Sussex pick up where body doubling leaves off.
