The gentle decluttering checklist: 30 easy wins, room by room

Most decluttering checklists are secretly to-do lists for someone with a free week and endless energy. This one is different: every item takes minutes, needs no agonising decisions, and counts as a win.

The rule: pick one item from the list when you have a few minutes. Tick it off. Stop, or pick another, both are allowed. There is no order and no deadline.

Kitchen

  • Bin anything out of date in one cupboard (just one).
  • Let go of mugs beyond the number of people you'd ever host.
  • Recycle takeaway menus, dead batteries and mystery keys from the junk drawer.
  • Match plastic tubs to lids; recycle the widows and orphans.
  • Clear one worktop corner completely, and enjoy looking at it.

Bathroom

  • Bin expired medicines (pharmacies take them back) and dried-up products.
  • Donate unopened toiletries you'll never use.
  • Keep your two best towels per person; demote the scruffiest to cleaning rags.
  • Empty the bath toy basket of anything mouldy or outgrown.
  • Clear the side of the bath or the shower shelf of empties.

Bedroom

  • Take the cups and glasses back to the kitchen. (No shame. We've all got one.)
  • Clear just the bedside table.
  • Rehome the chair-of-clothes: hang the clean, wash the worn.
  • Pull out anything under the bed you forgot existed, decide on five items only.
  • Donate one pillow or blanket you never reach for.

Living room

  • Gather every remote, charger and cable into one basket or drawer.
  • Recycle magazines and papers older than a month.
  • Pick five books you'll never reread for the charity shop.
  • Cull dead pens from the pot (test them, it's oddly satisfying).
  • Reset the sofa: blankets folded, cushions on, crumbs gone.

Hallway & entrance

  • Pair the shoes; donate the ones nobody's worn since last winter.
  • Empty coat pockets and donate coats that no longer fit anyone.
  • Deal with the post pile: recycle junk, one tray for action.
  • Return borrowed things waiting by the door (or put them in the car).
  • Clear the stairs of things "going up later". Take one trip now.

Anywhere

  • Fill one bag for donation, any room, any speed.
  • Delete 20 photos from your phone (screenshots count double).
  • Unsubscribe from three marketing emails.
  • Bin three things you can see right now that are actual rubbish.
  • Choose one "not today" box for hard decisions, and let it be enough.

If the list feels impossible

If even the easy wins feel out of reach right now, that's not laziness, it's usually overwhelm, and it's exactly what I help with. A Fresh Start Reset means we do the starting together, and body doubling sessions give you company for the tasks that won't begin alone. No judgement, ever, that's a promise.
